Preservation Packaging

Queensland State Archives maintain an ongoing program for the provision of archival packaging material for all permanent records in storage at Queensland State Archives. This assists to reduce the deterioration of these records and includes:



Treatments

Queensland State Archives carries out conservation treatments on records within its holdings that have deteriorated to a stage where the information they contain may be lost through continued use.

Treatments are carried out in accordance with the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material Inc.'s Code of Ethics and Guidance for Conservation Practice.


Reprography

The Reprography Unit forms part of the Preservation Services Branch of Queensland State Archives.

QSA reproduce onto microfilm those records in our collection, which are both fragile and in heavy demand. The microfilm is then provided to researchers, while the original records are in storage thus preventing further damage.

Master microfilm are stored in a cool storage vault at 10°C ± 2°C and 35% ± 5% relative humidity. 

The Unit is also responsible for photographic copying and digital imaging of records for researchers.


Microfilming

As a service to Government agencies that are microfilming records, Queensland State Archives has released a Guideline for Best Practice Microfilming of Public Records.

Queensland State Archives operates a master microfilm storage vault for the storage of archival public records filmed by Government agencies.
