Queensland State Archives holds many resources within its collection to assist researchers interested in:
- locating their own school admission details
- organising a school reunion
- compiling information on the history of a school
- finding teacher records.
Types of school records
Some of the most useful details concerning students are to be found in the school admission registers. They usually record student's name, age, name of parents/guardian, address, occupation, date of admission, year and class grade and date of leaving.
Note, school admission registers are organised by the date the student first enrolled at the school and there is generally only a single entry for each student. So, for example, to search for the students who completed Year 7 in the same year at Mount Gravatt State School, the admission registers for Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, and Year 7 would need to be reviewed.
Corporal punishment registers
Corporal punishment registers were kept by the head teacher of each school and record all corporal punishment administered by the head teacher or an assistant (authorised by the minister). The register usually contains date, name of the pupil/s receiving corporal punishment, fault or incident requiring punishment and the kind and extent of punishment.
School administration files
The school files primarily deal with the day-to-day administration and maintenance of the school. Occasionally students are mentioned, particularly when an application is made for the opening of a school or a proposal is made for a change in the school's structure.
The Department of Public Works maintained several series of records relating to schools. These include plans and specifications relating to such things as new buildings, renovations and maintenance of schools, detail ledgers and contract ledgers.
Within Queensland State Archives collection are a number of registers containing personal, professional and employment details about State School teachers. These include such details as annual returns of teachers, pay records, appointments, classifications, salaries and qualifications.
Locating school records
The easiest way to locate records relating to a school is to enter the name of the school into the Basic Search option of Queensland State Archives catalogue, ArchivesSearch
, and Image Queensland
Note, entering Mount Gravatt school will result in a broader search being done, and more results being retrieved, than entering Mount Gravatt State school.
