About Us
Queensland State Archives is established under section 21 the Public Records Act 2002 (the Act) as the States archives and records management authority.Queensland State Archives is the custodian of the largest and most significant documentary heritage collection in Queensland. It manages the States archival holdings and facilitates public access to the States cultural and historical records.
With the introduction of the Act, Queensland State Archives became the lead agency for State and local government recordkeeping in Queensland. The Act and its accompanying recordkeeping Information Standards enable Queensland State Archives to develop and implement a comprehensive recordkeeping policy framework to ensure a consistent approach to the creation, management, disposal, storage, preservation, and retrieval of government information.

Mission
Queensland State Archives promotes the implementation of appropriate information management principles and practices across public authorities by managing specific projects as a lead agency and regulating preservation and disposal of public records. Queensland State Archives also identifies and manages public records of enduring value in all media, and makes public records available for use by present and future generations.
Role
Queensland State Archives develops policy and provides advice to Government and to Government agencies, on the management of public records of enduring value, and facilitates access to information about Government. Our role includes:
- Supporting the effectiveness and accountability of Government administration
- Promoting the role of public records as supporting the rule of law
- Preserving documentation about the interactions between the people of Queensland and their Government
- Providing access to the non-current public records of State and local Government
- Facilitating access to information about Government.
Services
- Provision of policy advice to whole of government on the management of public records of enduring value
- Advice and assistance to Government agencies in developing appropriate records retention/disposal schedules
- Authorisation for destruction of records under Section 26 of the Public Records Act 2002
- Provision of repository facilities for the storage of records of enduring value in a physical environment designed to maximise their life span
- Transfer, storage and preservation of permanent master microfilm in a controlled environment on behalf of government agencies
- Provision of facilities and services to enable the public to access government records
- Provision of a range of activities such as seminars, workshops, exhibitions, as well as the production of publications, designed to improve public knowledge of the collections and increase usage by the public
- Projects to facilitate access to information about Government.
