1973 Cabinet Documents

In mid-December 2003, Minister Paul Lucas (then Minister for Innovation and Information Economy) released under embargo the 1973 Cabinet Minutes at a media launch at Queensland State Archives (QSA). The event was covered by State and national media representatives who researched the minutes, in some cases spending days at the archives, and ran their stories early January.

Hot topics for State Cabinet in 1973 included:

• noting a Flood Report only months before the disastrous January 1974 floods
• the promotion of Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Lewis
• the establishment of a committee to examine gender discrimination in Queensland, and
• for the first time approval of anti-hijacking equipment for Queensland Police, in response to increased international airline hijacking.

1973 Queensland Cabinet Minutes Report

In all Commonwealth countries, public records legislation restricts public access to Cabinet Minutes for 30 years. The release of the 1973 Cabinet Minutes, held at QSA, provides the public with an opportunity to explore in more detail the Queensland Government’s major decisions of the day and associated background material.
