2004 is the thirtieth anniversary of the 1974 flood, the worst in living memory in Queensland and second only in magnitude to the great flood of 1893. In January, 1974 Cyclone Wanda brought record floods to many area of the State. Ipswich lost about 40 homes to flood waters. The Brisbane area, where twelve people drowned and nearly 7,000 homes were partially or totally flooded, was the most severely hit. Many areas of Queensland experienced record floods and about $200,000,000 damage was recorded across the State.
