Codes of Best Practice

Codes and standards of best practice are:

AS ISO 15489: Information and Documentation: Records Management and Australia's National Records and Archives Competency.

BSB01 Business Services Training Package Competency Standards: Strategic Management and Recordkeeping
These national competency standards identify the different levels of skills and knowledge required for managing records. The Standards provide a useful tool for developing recordkeeping programs, job design, recruitment and selection; designing training and development programs for recordkeeping personnel; and implementing AS ISO 15489. The Standards are available to order from Innovation and Business Skills Australia

AS ISO 15489 Information and Documentation: Records Management - Part 1: General and
ISO 15489-2: Information and Documentation: Records Management - Part 2: Guidelines [Technical Report]
The Standard is a strategic level statement of policy and practice. It also provides a methodology to assist agencies in developing best practice records systems. The Standard is supported by a Technical Report which contains more detailed information concerning the implementation of the Standard. The Standard presents strategies and operational guidelines for the introduction and maintenance of practices which will ensure that records documenting business, legal and fiscal requirements are managed in an efficient and accountable manner. The Standard focuses on the creation of records and their management over time.

As a management tool the Standard can be applied to records created in any format and can be applied to the design and development of new recordkeeping systems as well as measuring the effectiveness of existing systems. The methodologies in the Standard are particularly appropriate for managing electronic records where decisions made at the systems design stage profoundly affect which records are kept and how they are managed.
