In collaboration with Government agencies, Queensland State Archives prepares retention and disposal schedules for public records. This activity is closely related to the appraisal activity.
Once an agency has developed a disposal schedule, it is submitted to the State Archivist for approval.
Queensland State Archives also develops general disposal schedules for use in many agencies throughout Government. For example, a General Retention and Disposal Schedule for Administrative Records has been prepared.

When using these schedules, public authorities may sentence and dispose of certain records, however under section 13 of the Public Records Act 2002 public records not identified in these schedules can not be disposed of without written authorisation from the State Archivist. The following general disposal schedules have been approved by the State Archivist under the Public Records Act 2002.
