QSA Expansion Project

Why does Archives need to expand?

The current Queensland State Archives’ facility at Runcorn was built in 1992.  As it is nearing capacity, further storage is now required to meet the future archival needs of Queensland.

A new archival facility has been constructed at Runcorn, which adjoins the existing building.

The expansion will double current storage capacity and allow QSA to store records from over 600 Queensland public authorities for the next 10-15 years. The design also includes provision for Queensland’s future digital archive.

This is a joint project between Queensland State Archives and the Department of Public Works’ Project Services and Queensland Government Accommodation Office Units.

Design Features

The new building has been designed to complement the appearance of the current building and to provide a secure, purpose-built environment that will ensure the long-term preservation of Queensland’s heritage.

Bretton Watson, the project’s Architect, won Designer of the Year at the Department of Public Works Project Services Excellence Awards for the design of the QSA expansion project.
