What's at Queensland State Archives

Queensland State Archives (QSA) holds records of State Government departments, state courts, local government authorities, statutory authorities, Commissions of Inquiry, Ministerial Offices and Government-owned corporations of enduring value for historical or other reasons.

Although QSA does hold some records pre-dating the separation of the colony of Queensland from New South Wales in 1859, most QSA records were created in the period from 1859. Most public records referring to Queensland prior to 1859 are held by the State Records Authority of New South Wales.

Architectural drawings of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement and other archival records of Queensland’s convict era have been officially listed on the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisations (UNESCO) Memory of the World Register which aims to preserve and disseminate valuable archive holdings and library collections worldwide.

Over 63 archival records from the collection have been listed dating from 1828 to 1842; these records comprise four separate bound volumes and a set of 59 maps and architectural drawings. Click here to view the items.

After years of searching, two vital founding documents of Queensland have been discovered in the National Archives United Kingdom. See them on the Documenting a Democracy website along with the other founding documents for Queensland.

One of the most important documents in Queensland's history is the Proclamation of Queensland which declared Queensland a separate colony from New South Wales when it was read to an assembled crowd on 10 December 1859.
