What's at Queensland State Archives

Queensland State Archives (QSA) holds records of State Government departments, state courts, local government authorities, statutory authorities, Commissions of Inquiry, Ministerial Offices and Government-owned corporations of enduring value for historical or other reasons.

Although QSA does hold some records pre-dating the separation of the colony of Queensland from New South Wales in 1859, most QSA records were created in the period from 1859. Most public records referring to Queensland prior to 1859 are held by the State Records Authority of New South Wales.

After years of searching, two vital founding documents of Queensland have been discovered in the National Archives United Kingdom. See them on the Documenting a Democracy website along with the other founding documents for Queensland.

A select number of items from the collection are being digitised. Click here to see some of these. As more items are made available they will be added. You'll be amazed at some of the items held such as images of World Expo 88 and records relating to the Courier-Mail.

Records held at QSA are preserved in their original order, and wherever possible, with the creating agency's finding aids.

What's Not at Queensland State Archives

QSA does not collect manuscripts, newspapers, photographs, books or private archives such as business, church or society records.

For these, please contact the John Oxley Library, a section of the State Library of Queensland specialising in the history of Queensland. The library is located at the State Library of Queensland, Queensland Cultural Centre, South Brisbane.
