Background
Assistant Immigration Agents were responsible to the Immigration Department within the portfolio of the Chief Secretary. From 1882 all Clerks of Petty Sessions were appointed sub-immigration agents. From 1904 the Police Magistrate, Maryborough acted as the Assistant Immigration Agent and from 1908 the Clerk of Petty Sessions, Maryborough acted as Sub-Immigration Agent.
Assistant Immigration Agents publicised ships' arrivals in the local press, provided information and services to immigrants such as accommodation and rations at Immigration Depots, arranged employment, and also processed government statistical information and ships' passenger lists and other immigrant records.

Series ID 13053 (IMA3/12), Correspondence and papers re Nominated Immigrants, Europe, 1904-1907
This series consists of papers and correspondence including passage remittance certificate forms, memos and letters, sent to the Assistant Immigration Agent, Maryborough by the Immigration Department, relating to nominated immigrants from Europe. Passage remittance certificate forms include the names of the nominated persons, the amount deposited and the signature of the applicant. The papers also include two leaflets: one leaflet setting out rates of passages for nominated immigrants and where applications and payment should be made, and the other leaflet or circular, an instruction to agents regarding application forms.

Series ID 13054 (IMA3/11), Register of Prospective Immigrants Nominated for Passage, 1884-1896
This series consists of a register entitled Immigration Book, kept by the Assistant Immigration Agent, Maryborough, of prospective immigrants nominated for passage. Details vary but include the date, nominator and address, nominee and address (country of origin), how dealt with (for example, certificate to be returned to nominator), amount of passage, date and receipt number.

Explanatory Notes
- ? indicates there is doubt about the entry due to difficulty in interpreting handwriting
- Handwriting is extremely difficult to read in places, T and F are difficult to distinguish and correct/consistent spelling is not always apparent e.g. Tuohy and Touhy.
- Check all possible spelling variants
- All given names are abbreviated as they appear in the original record
- Mc and Mac names are interfiled
- O names are indexed without an apostrophe e.g. O DWYER
- In Series ID 13054 entries written as: Smith TB (Thomas). The signature indicates the name in brackets
- In Series ID 13054 dates are not always 'in order' - page 52 says 1885, although it is clearly 1886. Page 68, "March" is in the middle of the month of April.
