The bundle of correspondence also includes other documents related to the activities of the Chief Secretary's Department during 1913.

The Index

The details were collated by various officials in the Police districts so that the department 'should possess trustworthy information regarding the coloured residents of Queensland'.

The initial indexing of the original lists was compiled by Paul Mackett and Jon Kehrer. The index should not be viewed as a complete list of all non-British subjects living in the region as some individuals may have been missed when the original lists were compiled.

The index includes the name of the individual, birthplace, age, residence, date of arrival in Queensland and whether the individual has been naturalised by 1913 based on the information included in the original documents. The index also usually includes the Police Subdistrict within the Police District where the individual was counted.

The correspondence lists a number of individuals by nationality, location and occupation without additional personal details. This list is included below:

List of assisted immigrants

When using the index, please check for all possible variations of the individual's name. In a number of instances, it is not clear which name is the family name. This particularly occurs with names of Chinese, Indian and Japanese origin.

Errors from the original document have been corrected where the correct spelling/entry is obvious eg: 'housewhife' becomes 'housewife' and '18933' becomes '1893'.

Some original errors have been transcribed and followed by [sic] eg: 1998 [sic].
