Index to Personal files for Nominated Immigrants, 1908-1922
This Index was compiled from Series ID 5611, Card Index to Personal Files for Nominated Immigrants, 1908-1922.
Background
The series was created and used by the Immigration Department.
These cards record information regarding persons who were nominated or sponsored to immigrate to Queensland between 1908 and 1922.
Cards also exist for persons who made inquiries about immigration to Queensland, rejected applicants, applicants who returned to their country of origin etc. In many cases one member of the family came out alone, then nominated the remaining family members who followed later.
The cards usually give the name, occupation and overseas address of the main nominee, and names, ages and sometimes relationships of all persons nominated; the name and address in Queensland of the person who nominated them; ship and date of arrival (if applicable); and various remarks. Other details may include occupation of spouse; whether the relevant file has been destroyed (details recorded on the back of the card).
The image below (click for larger image) depicts a Source Card from Item 868946 (IMM/118) for William John ABBISS and family, Application No.24002, date of arrival 12/3/1911.

Explanatory Notes
- Check all possible spelling variants
- All given names are abbreviated as initials as they appear in the original record
- Mc and Mac names are interfiled in the index
- O names are not indexed with an apostrophe e.g. O DWYER
- ? or . indicate difficulty in interpreting the handwriting
- - or a blank cell indicates that there is no information recorded in the original
- The year shown in the index is either the year of arrival (if applicable) or the year of nomination.
- Use the age only as a rough guide, as this information is unreliable. Where there are two or more cards for the same family, the ages shown on one card often differ from those on another. Sometimes the age is that at the time of nomination, which may be several years prior to the date of arrival in Australia.
