Indexes - Teachers in Queensland 1860-1904
Background
This Index has been compiled from Series ID 6425 Registers of Teachers (Personal, Professional and Employment Details), 1860-1903
The Board of General Education came into being in 1860 and was responsible for education in Queensland. At some time about 1870, details concerning teachers were copied into two registers, one for males and one for females (EDB/O1 - EDB/O2). The registers provide a succinct record of the teachers’ careers. The index from the Board of General Education registers (EDB/O1-2) has been included because there is sometimes not a corresponding page in the register. The index gives brief information about each teacher.
The index at the front of each of these registers appears to be a list of all teachers who had taught for the Board. It is possible for one teacher to be listed in this index three times. Entries would be in the index, and in each series of registers.

The Department of Public Instruction replaced the Board of General Education in 1875. All teachers working for the Department were entered or re-entered into new registers, this practice continued until 1904 (EDU/V1-EDU27). The information recorded in the registers for Male teachers includes:
- Teacher’s name
- Date of birth;
- Nationality (sometimes gives birthplace);
- Religious denomination;
- Date admitted to the service;
- Date of resignation;
- Professional training received;
- Classifications; Appointments [schools];
- Miscellaneous facts;
- Usual signature [an example as written by the Department];
- Number of Children; Inspectors reports;
- Remarks;
- Salary details.
- For Female teachers the following additional information is included: Name of Husband (if married); Husband’s occupation.
The information pages are provided for those teachers who were teaching at the time the registers were created and not all entries are complete.

- ? or … indicates there is doubt about the entry due to difficulty in interpreting the handwriting. Please note there may be transcription errors due to these difficulties.
- Check all possible spelling variants
- Names have been transcribed as written
- Mc and Mac names are interfiled - or a blank cell indicates that there is no information recorded in the original record
